What Causes Hypochromic and Microcytic Red Blood Cells?
These abnormalities are often associated with certain types of anemia, particularly iron deficiency anemia. Other causes may include thalassemia, chronic disease anemia, and sideroblastic anemia. In these conditions, there is either a deficiency in iron or a defect in hemoglobin synthesis, leading to the production of RBCs that are both smaller and less red.
