What are the staining techniques used in histology?
Various staining techniques are used to visualize tissue components under the microscope. Common techniques include:
Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain
: Differentiates cell nuclei (blue/purple) and cytoplasm (pink).
Masson's trichrome
: Stains collagen fibers blue/green, muscle fibers red, and cell nuclei black.
Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain
: Stains carbohydrates and mucopolysaccharides magenta.
