Tumor progression can be divided into several stages:
1. Hyperplasia: An increase in the number of normal cells. 2. Dysplasia: Abnormal cell growth and morphology. 3. Carcinoma in situ: Abnormal cells that have not invaded surrounding tissues. 4. Invasive carcinoma: Tumor cells invade surrounding tissues. 5. Metastasis: Tumor cells spread to distant sites.
Each stage has distinct histological characteristics that aid in diagnosis and treatment planning.
