DAD typically progresses through two stages: the exudative phase and the organizing phase.
Exudative Phase: This initial phase occurs within the first week of injury and is characterized by the accumulation of protein-rich edema fluid in the alveolar spaces, the formation of hyaline membranes, and the influx of inflammatory cells like neutrophils. Organizing Phase: In the subsequent weeks, the lung tissue undergoes organization and repair. This phase is marked by the proliferation of type II pneumocytes, fibroblast migration, and the deposition of extracellular matrix components, which may lead to fibrosis.
