The dermis can be subdivided into two distinct layers:
Papillary Dermis: This is the uppermost layer of the dermis, characterized by its loose connective tissue and the presence of dermal papillae, which interlock with the epidermal ridges. These structures help anchor the epidermis to the dermis and increase the surface area for nutrient exchange. Reticular Dermis: This deeper layer is denser and contains thicker collagen fibers, providing tensile strength and elasticity to the skin. It also houses various adnexal structures such as sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and hair follicles.
