Glycolysis consists of ten steps, which can be divided into two phases: the preparatory phase and the payoff phase.
Preparatory Phase: In this phase, glucose is phosphorylated and converted into fructose-1,6-bisphosphate. This phase consumes ATP. Payoff Phase: In this phase, fructose-1,6-bisphosphate is split into two three-carbon molecules, which are then converted into pyruvate. This phase produces ATP and NADH.
