Radioactive isotopes, or radioisotopes, have unstable nuclei that decay over time, releasing radiation in the form of alpha, beta, or gamma rays. These properties make them useful for autoradiography in histological studies. Commonly used radioisotopes in histology include tritium (³H), carbon-14 (¹⁴C), and phosphorus-32 (³²P).
