Osteons, also known as Haversian systems, are the fundamental functional units of compact bone. They are cylindrical structures that run parallel to the long axis of the bone, providing it with strength and rigidity. Each osteon consists of concentric rings of calcified matrix called lamellae surrounding a central canal, known as the Haversian canal.
