Leukocytes, or white blood cells, are the cells of the immune system involved in protecting the body against both infectious disease and foreign invaders. There are several types of leukocytes, each with unique functions:
Neutrophils: The most abundant type of white blood cells, pivotal in the body's defense against bacterial infections. Lymphocytes: These include B cells and T cells, essential for adaptive immune responses. Monocytes: These cells differentiate into macrophages and dendritic cells, playing a role in phagocytosis and antigen presentation. Eosinophils: Involved in combating multicellular parasites and certain infections in vertebrates. Basophils: Responsible for inflammatory reactions during immune response, including histamine release.
