Central cores are regions within muscle fibers that lack the normal cross-striations seen in healthy muscle tissue. They appear as defined, centrally located areas devoid of mitochondria and sarcoplasmic reticulum. These cores are typically seen under a microscope and are a hallmark of certain myopathies, such as central core disease (CCD).
