In histology, CEA is often used as an immunohistochemical marker to identify certain types of cancer cells. Tissues suspected of being cancerous can be stained with antibodies against CEA, allowing pathologists to determine if the cancer is likely present. This is particularly useful in cancers of the colon, rectum, pancreas, lung, and breast.
