Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion. It is normally produced in gastrointestinal tissue during fetal development, but production stops before birth. In adults, CEA levels are usually very low. However, certain cancers can produce CEA, making it a valuable tumor marker in clinical diagnostics.
