To measure Breslow Thickness, a pathologist examines a biopsy sample under a microscope. The measurement is taken from the top of the granular layer of the epidermis down to the deepest point of tumor invasion. If the epidermis is ulcerated, the measurement is taken from the base of the ulceration.
