RXRα regulates cell differentiation by modulating the expression of genes involved in the differentiation pathways. For instance, in the skin, RXRα controls the differentiation of keratinocytes, which are the predominant cell type in the epidermis. It also plays a role in adipocyte differentiation and the formation of adipose tissue.
