Leukocyte rolling slows down the leukocytes, allowing them to interact more effectively with chemokines presented on the endothelial surface. These chemokines activate integrins on the leukocytes, changing them from a low-affinity to a high-affinity state. This results in firm adhesion of leukocytes to the endothelial cells, a prerequisite for their subsequent migration into the tissue.
