The parfocal mechanism is achieved through careful design and alignment of the objective lenses. Each objective lens is calibrated to have the same focal plane. This means that once the specimen is focused at a lower magnification, switching to a higher magnification should only require fine-tuning with the fine focus knob, rather than re-focusing entirely.
