Upon binding to IP3, which is generated from phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) by the action of phospholipase C, the IP3 receptor undergoes a conformational change. This change opens the calcium channel, allowing calcium ions stored in the ER to flow into the cytoplasm. This increase in intracellular calcium concentration can activate various signaling pathways and cellular processes.
