hematoxylin and eosin (h&e) stain:
How Does H&E Stain Work?
H&E staining involves two primary dyes:
hematoxylin
and
eosin
. Hematoxylin stains cell nuclei blue to purple by binding to nucleic acids, while eosin stains the cytoplasm and extracellular matrix pink to red by binding to proteins.
