Cross bridge formation begins when the myosin heads bind to specific sites on the actin filaments. This interaction is regulated by the presence of calcium ions and the proteins troponin and tropomyosin. When calcium ions bind to troponin, it causes a conformational change that moves tropomyosin away from the binding sites on actin, thereby allowing myosin heads to attach to actin.
