How do Fetal Cells Enter the Maternal Circulation?
During pregnancy, the placental barrier between the maternal and fetal blood supplies is not completely impermeable. Fetal cells can cross this barrier through processes such as transplacental migration and can be detected in the maternal blood as early as the first trimester.
