Adherent cells use specialized structures known as cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) to attach to surfaces. These molecules include integrins, cadherins, and selectins, which interact with the extracellular matrix (ECM) and other cells. The attachment process is facilitated by focal adhesions and adherens junctions, which anchor the cell cytoskeleton to the ECM.
