The formation of neuroendocrine granules begins within the Golgi apparatus of the neuroendocrine cell. Prohormones and other precursor molecules are processed and packaged into vesicles in the Golgi. These vesicles then mature into granules by acquiring the necessary enzymes and other components required for the conversion of prohormones into active hormones.
