The occurrence of squamous metaplasia is often a protective mechanism. It typically happens in response to chronic irritation, such as smoking or vitamin A deficiency. The newly formed squamous cells are more resilient to physical and chemical stress, thus providing a better defense mechanism for the affected tissue. In the cervix, for example, squamous metaplasia may occur as a response to hormonal changes or infections.
