Ferroportin is primarily located in the plasma membrane of cells involved in iron metabolism. These include enterocytes in the duodenum, which absorb dietary iron, hepatocytes in the liver, which store iron, and macrophages in the spleen and liver, which recycle iron from senescent red blood cells.
