Mononuclear phagocytes are found throughout the body. Monocytes circulate in the bloodstream and can migrate into tissues where they differentiate into macrophages or dendritic cells. Tissue-resident macrophages are present in various organs, including the liver (Kupffer cells), lungs (alveolar macrophages), brain (microglia), and spleen (splenic macrophages).
