What role does histology play in diagnosing platelet disorders?
Platelet disorders involve abnormal platelet count or function. In ITP, histological examination of bone marrow may show increased megakaryocytes, the cells responsible for producing platelets, as the body attempts to compensate for peripheral platelet destruction. In thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), histology can reveal microthrombi in small blood vessels, composed of platelets and von Willebrand factor.
