Besides his work on cell theory, Schwann made several other important discoveries. He identified the role of pepsin in the digestive system, showing that it is a key enzyme in breaking down proteins in the stomach. He also investigated the process of fermentation and concluded that microorganisms were involved, which later influenced the work of Louis Pasteur.
