The epidermis is the outermost layer of cells in the dermal tissue. It acts as a protective barrier against physical damage, pathogens, and water loss. The epidermis is often covered by a waxy cuticle that minimizes water evaporation. Specialized cells such as guard cells, which control the opening and closing of stomata, are also part of the epidermis.
