What is the Role of BMPs in Bone and Cartilage Formation?
BMPs are essential for osteogenesis (bone formation) and chondrogenesis (cartilage formation). They stimulate the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblasts and chondrocytes, the cells responsible for producing bone and cartilage matrix, respectively. BMPs also regulate the expression of genes involved in the synthesis of extracellular matrix components, such as collagen and proteoglycans.
