S100 is a family of low-molecular-weight proteins characterized by their calcium-binding capacity. They are named for their solubility in 100% saturated ammonium sulfate solution. These proteins are involved in a variety of intracellular and extracellular functions, including regulation of protein phosphorylation, enzyme activity, and cell growth and differentiation.
