Meibum is a lipid-rich secretion produced by the Meibomian glands, also known as tarsal glands. These specialized sebaceous glands are located in the tarsal plates of the eyelids. Meibum plays a critical role in maintaining the health and function of the tear film by forming its outermost lipid layer, which reduces the evaporation of the underlying aqueous layer.
