MBL is a type of collectin, a protein that recognizes specific sugar molecules found on the surface of pathogens. MBL binds to mannose, fucose, and N-acetylglucosamine residues, which are commonly present on bacterial, viral, and fungal surfaces but rare on host cells. This binding initiates the lectin pathway.
