What Histological Changes are Associated with Elevated Urinary Porphyrins?
Elevated urinary porphyrins can be associated with various histological changes depending on the type of porphyria. For instance, in cutaneous porphyrias like Porphyria Cutanea Tarda (PCT), there can be blistering and fragility of the skin due to sun exposure. Histologically, these changes can be observed as subepidermal blisters with a minimal inflammatory response. In hepatic porphyrias, liver biopsy may show hepatocyte damage, fibrosis, and deposits of porphyrin pigments.
