The epidermis is made up of several types of cells:
Keratinocytes: The most abundant cells, responsible for producing keratin, a protein that strengthens the skin. Melanocytes: Cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color and protects against UV radiation. Langerhans cells: Part of the immune system, these cells detect and fight pathogens. Merkel cells: Sensory cells that are involved in the sensation of touch.
