PNS: Schwann cells actively promote regeneration by forming guiding structures and secreting growth factors. Regeneration is generally more successful in the PNS. CNS: Oligodendrocytes, the myelinating cells of the CNS, do not provide the same supportive environment as Schwann cells. Additionally, the CNS has inhibitory molecules such as Nogo that impede regeneration. As a result, regeneration in the CNS is limited.
