The VVG stain consists of two major staining solutions:
1. Verhoeff’s Solution: This is composed of hematoxylin, ferric chloride, and iodine, which together form a complex that binds strongly to elastic fibers. 2. Van Gieson’s Solution: This is a mixture of picric acid and acid fuchsin. Picric acid stains collagen yellow, while acid fuchsin stains other tissue elements such as muscle fibers and cytoplasm red.
