resource based relative value scale
What are the components of RBRVS?
The RBRVS is composed of three main elements:
Physician Work
(measured by time, skill, and effort)
Practice Expense
(overhead costs such as equipment and staff)
Professional Liability Insurance
(costs associated with malpractice insurance)
Each of these components is assigned a relative value unit (RVU), which is then adjusted by a geographic practice cost index (GPCI) to account for regional variations in costs.
