Microcomedones are the earliest detectable lesions in acne pathogenesis. They are microscopic plugs of sebum, dead skin cells, and other debris that form in the hair follicles. Although they are not visible to the naked eye, they are the precursors to visible acne lesions such as comedones, papules, and pustules.
