ICAM-1 belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily and consists of five immunoglobulin-like domains. Its extracellular region allows for interaction with its primary ligands, such as LFA-1 (lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1) and Mac-1 (macrophage-1 antigen), which are integrins expressed on leukocytes.
