Type I collagen is the most abundant collagen in bones. Mutations in the COL1A1 and COL1A2 genes are primarily responsible for OI. These genes encode the alpha chains of type I collagen. Mutations can lead to either a reduction in the amount of collagen produced or the production of defective collagen with an abnormal structure.
