Calcineurin is tightly regulated by intracellular calcium levels and the presence of calmodulin. Additionally, specific immunosuppressive drugs, such as cyclosporine and tacrolimus, inhibit calcineurin activity, preventing T cell activation and thus are used clinically to prevent organ transplant rejection.
