The retina contains several layers of neurons and support cells:
Photoreceptor Layer: Consists of rods and cones, which detect light and color. Bipolar Cell Layer: Transmits signals from photoreceptors to ganglion cells. Ganglion Cell Layer: The axons of these cells form the optic nerve, which carries visual information to the brain.
In addition, the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) supports photoreceptors by absorbing excess light and phagocytizing photoreceptor debris.
