The immune system adapts through compensatory mechanisms in other lymphoid organs. The lymph nodes and liver take over some of the spleenâs functions, such as filtering blood and mounting immune responses. However, the efficiency is reduced, leading to an increased risk of infections, particularly by encapsulated bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae.
