Polyadenylation occurs in two main steps. Initially, the pre-mRNA is cleaved at its 3' end. This is followed by the addition of the poly(A) tail by the enzyme poly(A) polymerase. The cleavage site is determined by specific sequences in the pre-mRNA, particularly the AAUAAA signal, which is recognized by a complex of proteins.
