HPV primarily targets basal epithelial cells through micro-abrasions in the skin or mucosa. The virus integrates its DNA into the host cell genome, leading to the production of viral oncoproteins E6 and E7. These oncoproteins interfere with tumor suppressor proteins, such as p53 and Rb, resulting in uncontrolled cell proliferation and the potential for malignant transformation.
