In DESI, a high-velocity solvent spray is directed at a sample surface. The solvent droplets pick up analytes from the surface, forming charged droplets. These droplets then enter the mass spectrometer, where they are analyzed. The process is highly effective for examining complex biological tissues without requiring extensive sample preparation.
