Blood enters the capillary network from the arterioles and exits through the venules. The flow is regulated by precapillary sphincters, which are small bands of smooth muscle located at the junctions of arterioles and capillaries. These sphincters can contract or relax to control the amount of blood entering the capillary bed, thus regulating the exchange processes.
