Histologically, atrophy is identified by a decrease in cell size, often accompanied by a reduction in the number of cells. The cells that remain may show signs of autophagy, where cellular components are degraded and recycled. Tissue sections may reveal a loss of cellular detail, increased interstitial spaces, and sometimes the presence of lipofuscin granules, a pigment that accumulates as cells age and degrade.
