Adipocytes, also known as fat cells, store energy in the form of triglycerides. These cells contain large lipid droplets that can occupy most of the cell's volume. The lipid droplets are surrounded by a thin layer of cytoplasm and the cell membrane. When energy is needed, triglycerides are broken down into free fatty acids and glycerol, which are then released into the bloodstream.
