Specific antibodies are typically produced through immunization. An antigen, which is a substance that induces an immune response, is introduced into a host organism. The immune system responds by producing antibodies that specifically bind to that antigen. These antibodies can then be harvested and purified for use in histological applications. They can be either monoclonal, derived from a single cell line, or polyclonal, derived from multiple cell lines.
